Where communicators can find story ideas
Tap into your favorite news source, and find an angle to an event or trend that applies to your audience. There’s a wealth of inspiration if your eyes are open.
Perhaps because I grew up in the newspaper business (my parents owned a community weekly newspaper) this concern has never troubled me. I see stories everywhere.
One of the best ways to find new stories is to look at your favorite news source. If you’re younger than 35, this will be probably the Internet, but it might also be TV, a newspaper, or a magazine. Find out something that’s happening right now; then relate it to your own company.
In Canada, where I live, for example, the country is consumed by the drinking and drugging habits of Rob Ford, the mayor of our largest city. When we’re not fretting over that, we obsess about three senators who have been suspended for misusing their expense accounts. In the U.S., the disasters surrounding implementation of the Affordable Care Act have captured public attention. In the Philippines, Typhoon Haiyan has grabbed the headlines.
