Tips for conducting an intranet audit

Launching an engaging intranet remains a challenge for employee communications pros. Even after you find the right solution, there’s no telling how employees will engage until it’s launched. Providing value, and putting the employee experience front and center, requires constant iteration.

During Ragan’s Employee Communications and Culture Conference last year, Nathalie Santa Maria, then owner and CCO of Sunnyside Communications spoke with Laurie Weaver, VP of marketing and philanthropy and Monarch, about how the two collaborated to refine Monarch’s intranet.

Here’s what we learned.

When the pair began building Monarch’s intranet, they had to reckon with the company’s very large, and growing, distributed workforce. Over 60% of employees were not at the computer all day. At the time, the only staff correspondence was a weekly email newsletter from the CEO.

In 2018, the company landed on building an intranet content management system in Microsoft Sharepoint, which was already their existing document environment. This became the first iteration of the “My Monarch” intranet, but it had pros and cons.
