SharePoint site teaches managers how to communicate
Semiconductor manufacturer Micron spent the last few years developing resources for and training managers to communicate better with their employees. It changed the entire culture for the better.
That’s what Micron Technology, a maker of semiconductor devices with nearly 30,000 employees, discovered a few years ago. The company has been working toward making managers key communication sources ever since.
“One of the challenges in most organizations is that managers are typically very, very good in whatever their primary job is, and communications isn’t one of those,” says Jennifer Cammann, corporate communication strategist for the company.
It took some time, but Micron has figured out a way to make communication between managers and employees an integral part of its employee culture. All it took was building a website.
The research
In 2007, Micron changed its communications structure from a decentralized scattering among departments to one staff. That included the HR communications team, which had been doing some training with managers to make them better corporate communicators.
“We didn’t want to lose that element,” Cammann says. “We decided that we needed to start looking into how much time we should put into making managers into our major communication sources for our team.”
