Six months and 400 applications ago, company recruiters flew Mike Klein to three interviews in the United States for communications jobs. The results were disappointing. At the time, Klein was finishing a job with the federal government, and he wanted out of Washington, D.C.
“The realization came quickly that the bulk of internal communications work in D.C. was in federal government, which I’d sworn off,” Klein recounted.
Part of the problem, he said, was that most U.S. government contracts would require Klein, who is American, to give up the second passport he earned after living and working in United Kingdom. So he sought communications positions elsewhere in the States—to no avail.
Then he shifted his focus to Europe.
After one week in Europe, Klein had one job offer and three late-stage interviews. He soon accepted an offer in The Netherlands for an internal communicator position.
