Ragan.com by remote: One writer’s journey from sloth to frenzy
Jessica’s Journal reveals bouts of isolation, inertia and delirium—showing why working from home just didn’t quite work for her.
I started a journal because I didn’t have anybody to talk to for five days. This is my story…
Dear co-worker journal (Day One),
It’s 2 p.m., and I’m still in my pajamas.
At this point, I’m wondering if it’s even worth putting on clothes.
So far, working from home is pretty relaxing. I’ve got my space heater by my feet, I’m singing along to Steely Dan, and I just made myself a nice little sandwich. But I’m starting to worry that I’m almost too relaxed.
I haven’t really been doing any work. It’s difficult to feel motivated to write when nobody is watching me. I never realized how much I need an audience to type until today. My sentences can barely start, or they just collide into other half-formed thoughts.
Here is the main issue: I miss my co-workers. (Cue violins.) Actually, I just did. Thanks, Pandora.
Ragan’s office is a constant source of entertainment. Not having anybody around me is making me stir crazy. Reading what everybody is saying on Yammer just makes me miss my desk.
