In early 2005, Motorola operated at least 25 separate intranets run by various business units and departments. It also had more than 5,000 internal employee blogs scattered over these noncommunicating intranets.
The result: mass confusion.
The communication team spent the next two years consolidating all independent intranets into one site that’s easier to use.
The failure rate of Motorola’s new intranet, i’MOTO, dropped from 53 percent to 3 percent, but the site’s most promising new feature—a new employee directory—raised productivity and collaboration.
“People are discovering new ways of finding each other, learning about what projects and what expertise other people have that they never knew existed,” says Mary Owens, director of internal communications.
