Internet explodes with news, tributes and tweets about the death of Steve Jobs

Apple co-founder’s death at age 56 from pancreatic cancer resulted in an instantaneous outpouring of remembrances online.

News broke Wednesday evening with the news that Steve Jobs died at age 56.

The man who started Apple computer in a garage at age 21 with friend Stephen Wozniak lost his nearly eight-year battle with cancer Wednesday. His death comes just two months after resigning as CEO.

Apple announced his death at www.apple.com/stevejobs, saying:

“Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”

Apple set up an email account rememberingsteve@apple.com for those wanting to share their thoughts, memories and condolences. Apple CEO Tim Cook emailed employees Wednesday with a slightly expanded version of that statement.
