How to communicate a culture of accessibility this Disability Awareness Month
Spreading a message of inclusion will help uplift all parts of your organization.
It’s October, which means that it’s Disability Awareness Month. It’s the perfect time to consider how your organization approaches this important topic for employees from a diversity, equity and inclusion standpoint. When we create a more diverse workplace accessible to employees of all kinds, we create a place that is not just good for the bottom line of the business but for society as a whole.
With an estimated 1 billion people, or 15% of the world’s population living with some kind of disability, it’s critical that we as communicators and employers think about how we’re setting up the conversation about disability accommodation in the workplace. The big key here is putting out a message that focuses on inclusion. This can include reviewing and instituting company policies that promote the inclusion of those with disabilities, spreading a message of inclusion on social and other communications channels, and being sure to support those with disabilities in our organizations actively. It’s one thing to say we’re an inclusive company, but you’ll need to back that up through your messages and actions.
