A crash course in speaking at commencement

Follow these guidelines to earn high honors for your graduation address

Being asked to speak at a university could be more exciting than your own graduation day.

It’s certain to be more nerve-racking.

Vinca LaFleur, a partner at West Wing Writers, has some advice about what to do if you’re asked to inspire the Class of 2009.

Before you write a word, do your research. Browse the school’s Web site and check out the student newspaper. See if you can get in contact with any friends or alumni who attended the school, if it’s not your own alma mater.

Don’t forget to contact school officials.

“When you get the invitation, ask the host what’s on the mind of students right now,” LaFleur says. “Ask about what characterizes the class, what they’re most proud of, what makes them different, and what they would like to know about. Ask to look at speeches that have been given over the past few years and find out which ones were the biggest hits for the audience.”
