St. Louis County police chief: Shooting came after ‘remarkable amount of gunfire’

Protestors took to the streets in Ferguson, Missouri, on Sunday night to commemorate the anniversary of the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown by a police officer.

As the night wore on, another 18-year old was shot by police, and officials made every effort to communicate that it was not a repeat of what had happened a year earlier.

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said at an early-morning press conference that “a remarkable amount of gunfire” had been directed at four plainclothes officers, according to local CBS affiliate KMOX. Belmar said of the man who was shot, “No, they were not protestors; they were criminals.” He also said no officers were injured and that the ones involved were placed on administrative leave until they are deemed fit to return to duty.

Belmar didn’t identify the man who was shot, but the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that he is Tyrone Harris Jr., a friend of Brown’s. As of Monday morning, Harris was in critical condition.
