Annual Report

Giant Eagle’s annual report soars to victory

Visual and personal flourishes earn it top honors in Ragan’s annual awards.

An annual report is a snapshot: a picture that captures both a moment in time and a year in the life of a company. Giant Eagle’s 2011 Annual Report, which celebrates the company’s 80 years in the supermarket business, gives that picture depth and color with a bright design, a wide-ranging look at Giant’s Eagle’s operations, and a variety of voices to tell its story.

That’s why Giant Eagle is the winner of the Best Annual Report in Ragan’s Employee Communications Awards for 2011.

From the photo of father/daughter management team David S. Shapira (CEO) and Laura Shapira Karet (p. 4), to the clear-cut overview of financial data (page 6), to the human-interest story of team member Amanda’s turmoil when her 11-year-old son suffered a brain aneurysm (p. 16),  Giant Eagle’s annual report both humanizes the company and provides pertinent information on the reasons for its enduring success.

Every company has a culture and a personality, and its annual report should reflect that. Giant Eagle does this with images, design, and words that bring its stores to life and showcase an environment where customers feel welcome, employees feel valued, and shareholders feel rewarded.
