7 steps to creating a measurement dashboard

Before you start measuring, you’ll need to set definitions,  get a consensus and more.

The first law of measurement, according to Paine Publishing CEO Katie Delahaye Paine: Data without insight is just trivia.

Paine shared this maxim during Week 3 of Ragan’s Measurement Certificate Course for Communicators last fall, teeing up an explanation of how measurement dashboards function and how to create one that works.

These are Paine’s seven steps to creating a measurement dashboard.

1. Get consensus on purpose and audiences for your dashboard.

The first step starts with a series of questions designed to help you target your dash’s purpose to the audience(s) that will be engaging with it:

The second step is an audit of the data you already have, with a focus on key players, sources, tools, accuracy and validity. It begs more questions:

3. Check and collect the data.

Before beginning the third step, it’s important to know how you are integrating data. Knowing this requires deciding how it is collected, where it’s stored and what software you will use for visualizations. After that, go through this checklist:
