Gaming systems now stream television shows and movies and allow you to play cooperative games with people in other countries. There are even esports leagues that sell out sports arenas and pay tournament winners millions of dollars.
It was not always this advanced, though, and Nintendo played a significant role in its evolution.
Though founded in 1883 as a company that manufactured Japanese playing cards, it was its launch of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1983 that made Nintendo a household name.
The NES featured some of the most well-known video games, including Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong and Zelda, among many others.
The gaming industry has progressed quite a bit since the NES was introduced. To keep up with the evolving industry, Nintendo has developed many gaming consoles throughout its history. These systems include the Game Boy, Super NES, Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube, Wii and Nintendo 3DS.
